Service of Remembrance at Norwich Cathedral for those who have died through drug or alcohol within our community
There will be an opportunity to remember people of all ages who have died through drug and alcohol related problemsat Norwich Cathedral on Thursday 8th November 2007 at 7.30pm.
This Service of Remembrance will give family members, friends and people who have worked or supported people with drug and alcohol problems a time to remember fondly their loved ones or friends.
Whilst living with or supporting someone with a drug or alcohol problem can be extremely difficult, this service is an opportunity to also remember the good in those that have died and that every individual is unique and special.
The Service of Remembranceis being organised byparents who have lost loved ones in this way andpeople fromdifferentagencies.
Carol Taylor approached Julian Bryant from the Matthew Project with the idea of the service and it grew from there.
Carol's son, Jonathan passed away from a cocaine overdose in 2005 when he was 33 years old and she heard about a service of remembrance taking place in Aberdeen. Carol felt there was a need for something similar in Norfolk and Suffolk and commented,
'
one day, I hope there will be a national day across the UK to remember those who have died from drugs and alcohol. The service is a time to think about your loved one and meet others who have been through a similar experience, which can be very therapeutic'.
The Matthew Project is supporting this event and Julian Bryant, Director says
'I have personal experience of knowing people close to me who have died in this way. When someone dies like this, there is not always the time or the emotional energy to commemorate someone's life in the way you would like to. At the service I will be thinking of those people I have known and I'll be quietly praying for their families. It will be a very special and poignant service. Drugs and alcohol affect us all.'
During the service there will be an opportunity for people to choose a pebble and place it in front of the altar in memory of the person they have known and cared for. Canon Richard Capper will lead the service and different people will take part.
Tea and coffee with be available afterwards if people wish to stay. There will also be people available to talk to if this would be helpful.
